Most tile doesn't fail because of the tile. It fails because of what happened underneath it — rushed prep, thin waterproofing, a layout nobody checked. We exist to do it the other way.
Every CTS installation starts below the surface. We build the substrate flat, waterproof to full height, dial the slope to the drain, and lay out the field before a single tile is set. It takes longer. It lasts decades. That’s the whole trade-off, and we’ve made the same one from the start.

Substrate
We make it flat before we make it beautiful. Deflection checked, subfloor corrected, backer set and fastened to spec. Everything after this depends on this.

Waterproofing
Full height on every wet wall. Bonded membrane, flood-tested pans, sealed corners and penetrations. This is the step nobody sees and the one that decides whether it lasts.

Layout
The field is dry-laid and resolved before a tile is set — cuts balanced, courses level, joints consistent, and the pattern landing cleanly at every corner, niche, and fixture.

Finish
Full mortar coverage, lippage you can't feel, grout joints wiped clean, silicone at every change of plane. Then we clean the site and leave it the way we found it.

Twenty-five years. One trade.
A neighbor introduced me to a tile setter, and he asked if I wanted to come work for him. That was it. I was born and raised in San Jose and that’s where I started in 2001 — first day on the job I grabbed a bucket, mixed up some grout, and started grouting floors. In 2004 I moved to San Francisco, got my contractor’s license, and started Chevy Tile & Stone. Since then I’ve worked in most neighborhoods in the city and across Marin, and I still like the work.

A neighbor introduced me to a tile setter and he asked if I wanted to work for him. I started with a company in San Jose, where I was born and raised. First day on the job was grouting floors.

Moved up to San Francisco, got my contractor's license — CA CSLB #842224 — and started Chevy Tile & Stone. Licensed, insured and bonded is the baseline for working with serious general contractors and designers.

Still learning.
The materials keep changing. New panels, new setting systems, a new generation of tile setters mixing things we didn't use to. I read about it, keep an eye on what's coming out, and bring it onto my own jobs.
