Most tile doesn't fail because of the tile. It fails because of what happened underneath it — rushed prep, thin waterproofing, a layout nobody checked. We exist to do it the other way.
Every CTS installation starts below the surface. We build the substrate flat, waterproof to full height, dial the slope to the drain, and lay out the field before a single tile is set. It takes longer. It lasts decades. That’s the whole trade-off, and we’ve made the same one from the start.

Substrate
We make it flat before we make it beautiful. Deflection checked, subfloor corrected, backer set and fastened to spec. Everything after this depends on this.

Waterproofing
Full height on every wet wall. Bonded membrane, flood-tested pans, sealed corners and penetrations. This is the step nobody sees and the one that decides whether it lasts.

Layout
The field is dry-laid and resolved before a tile is set — cuts balanced, courses level, joints consistent, and the pattern landing cleanly at every corner, niche, and fixture.

Finish
Full mortar coverage, lippage you can't feel, grout joints wiped clean, silicone at every change of plane. Then we clean the site and leave it the way we found it.

Twenty-five years. One trade.
A neighbor introduced me to a tile setter, and he asked if I wanted to come work for him. That was it. I was born and raised in San Jose, and that’s where I started in 2001 — on my first day on the job, I grabbed a bucket, mixed up some grout, and started grouting floors. In 2004 I moved to San Francisco, got my contractor’s license, and started Chevy Tile & Stone. Since then I’ve worked in most neighborhoods in the city and across Marin, and I still like the work.

A neighbor introduced me to a tile setter, and he asked if I wanted to work for him. I started with a company in San Jose, where I was born and raised. My first day on the job was spent grouting floors.

How do you keep a tiled shower from leaking?
Waterproofing goes full height on every wet wall, with a bonded membrane, sealed corners and penetrations, and a flood-tested pan before any tile is set. The tile is the finish; the waterproofing underneath is what keeps water out.
Do you install large-format porcelain and GPT panels?

Do you work with designers and general contractors?
Yes. We work directly with homeowners and alongside interior designers and general contractors on San Francisco and Marin projects, including commercial work like the Fiorella restaurant on Clement Street.
How long does a shower tile installation take?
It depends on the size of the shower, the tile, and what we find once the old shower is opened up. Prep, waterproofing, and flood testing come before any tile is set, and we don't rush those steps. You'll get a schedule along with your estimate.
